Before you read this articleyou will need to know the following terms and definitions:

Game(-s): Noun. Singular or Plural. A standalone version of Settlers of Catan, which can be played right out of the box without making additional purchases. There is only one standalone (base) game of Catan.
Expansion(-s): Noun. Singular or Plural.  An Catan game that cannot be played by itself. It must be used in conjunction with a standalone (base) game. The 5 & 6-player expansions are a good example of this.
Scenario(-s): Noun. Singular or Plural. A small set of playing pieces and instructions that can be added to normal Catan gameplay. It cannot be played by itself--it must be used in conjunction with a standalone (base) game. The "Oil Springs" scenario is a good example of this.
Variant(-s): Noun. Singular or Plural. A set of instructions for using the pieces from a Catan game or expansion in a new way. Most variants are fan-generated and require printing and cutting out new pieces.

Draw Initial Resources

Now, each player receives three initial resources cards, corresponding to the three terrain hexes surrounding the town they have just placed (players may NOT draw a commodity).  Keep your resource cards/tokens hidden in your personal supply.

  1. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a Hill hex draw 1 Brick resource card.
  2. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a Field hex draw 1 Grain resource card.
  3. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a Forest hex draw 1 Lumber resource card.
  4. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a Pasture hex draw 1 Wool resource card.
  5. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a Mountain hex draw 1 Ore resource card.
  6. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a fishing tile or lake hex draw 1 random fish token from the opaque bag.
  7. Players who begin with a town adjacent to an oil hex receive 1 oil token.*
  8. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a spice hex receive 1 Spice resource card from the top of the randomly-shuffled, face-down Spice resource card deck.*
  9. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a gold field hex receive two gold (2 small coins).*
  10. Players who begin with a town adjacent to one or more barren hexes (deserts, blank water hexes, border pieces, etc.) may draw 1 favor token for each of the barren hexes they built next to (see Favor Token Rules).
  11. Players who begin with a town adjacent to a river hex receive two gold (2 small coins) for constructing there, and also a resource card matching the type of hex (no resource card if they build next to a marshland hex). Note that river hexes are not gold field hexes—they only produce normal resources and commodities.

*Building next to these types of hexes should not be possible if the board was set up according to my initial diagram.  If you are using your own Variable Set-Up, these types of hexes are not recommended for placement on the main starting island(s).

Example: See Illustration below.  Blue receives 1 Brick resource card, 1 Grain resource card, and 1 Wool resource card for his town.
