A: For a short game, we recommend you use just the base game, and simply reduce the number of Victory Points necessary to win! Adding expansions will generally lengthen gameplay, but adding scenarios can actually speed things up (by providing additional ways to earn Victory Points). Catan does more than cleverly deal with time constraints, however. This blog post explains how Catan manages to transcend the problems that most other games struggle with.
